The ability to upload large files directly to OneDrive is particularly helpful for customers in industries such as heavy manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, and media. Now, sharing of large files like a 3D model of a new building, a client commercial shot in 4K or 8K video, CAD files, a large dataset for a vaccine trial or research projects or large videos for educational projects will become more easier. The upload file size limit isn’t just for business customers and schools. Even those who are using OneDrive for personal use can take advantage of the increase in size limit to 250GB. For example, you can easily upload or your family video album to share with your relatives or upload that zip file containing a large PC game with your friends. “We’ve achieved the 250 GB limit by optimizing storage for upload performance—each file is split into chunks and each piece is encrypted with a unique key. All your files are backed up in Azure Storage, ensuring high availability and performance. You can easily upload and download your large files when you need them, where you need them,” says Microsoft in its techcommunity post announcing the increased limit. “And you need not worry about syncing these large files – with differential sync, only the changes that you and your collaborators make are synced—shortening the amount of time it takes you to sync, helping improve performance and reducing network utilization. Finally, as always, your files are always with you on any device, wherever you go, whether you’re editing files in OneDrive, sharing projects for review in SharePoint, or collaborating in Teams.” Support for 250 GB file size upload will start rolling out by the end of January with general availability by end of this quarter.
